Canterbury Club College Ministry
The University of Mary Washington
The UMW Canterbury Club College Ministry is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia and Trinity Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Recently the Canterbury Club has begun working closely with the Lutheran Campus Ministry at Christ Lutheran Church to become the Canterbury Episcopal & Lutheran Campus Ministry.
The mission of the Canterbury Club is to offer a space for students, faculty, and employees of UMW to rest, study, worship, have fun, serve, and grow in faith. Some of us are Episcopalians/Anglicans, but others come from a variety of denominational and faith backgrounds. We are male and female, straight and gay, conservative and progressive (and in between). Some of us are well established in our beliefs, and others have questions about the faith. All of us are part of a loving and supportive community of disciples who are helping each other follow the Way of Jesus, who calls to a life of radical hospitality by loving God, loving everybody else, and loving ourselves.
We meet every Sunday that school is in session at the Canterbury House at 12:30 PM for a free lunch prepared by parishioners. The Canterbury House is located across from Trinity at 820 College Avenue on the way to the Tennis Courts. We also meet on Tuesdays for worship, dinner, and conversation at 5:30 PM. These meetings currently take place either at the Canterbury House or Christ Lutheran Church (1300 Augustine Avenue). The Canterbury House is open for students to hang out, study, watch tv/movies or play from 8 AM - 11 PM daily. The chaplain is available during the week for pastoral care, spiritual direction, or just to talk over a cup of coffee or lunch.
Last school year, we took an exciting Mission Trip to New Orleans over Spring Break to help with the continued rebuilding in the city after Hurricane Katrina. We had eleven individuals go on the trip and had a wonderful time working, playing, and learning about the city. For Spring Break 2012 we are hoping to go on an international pilgrimage trip.
For more information about this ministry and our upcoming meetings and events, please talk to the chaplain, Fr. Brian, or visit our website.
