Gene Carter
Class of 2021
Dr. Gene R. Carter, Sr. is the retired Executive Director and CEO of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), an international professional development association.  Before joining ASCD, he served nine years as the Superintendent of Schools in Norfolk, Virginia.
He is an alumnus of Virginia State University (B.A.), Boston University (M.Ed.), and Teachers College, Columbia University (Ed.D.).  In 1991, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from TC.  He was also selected the first National Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators.  Dr. Carter received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Virginia State University and an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Old Dominion University.
Dr. Carter has served on the Board of Directors of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, the Board of Visitors at Old Dominion University, and the Board of Trustees at Teachers College, Columbia University.
He is a member of the Fredericksburg Rotary Club, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity Inc. (Epsilon Rho Boule), and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
He and his wife, Lillian Cecelia Young Carter, have two sons and four grandchildren.
